I found out today that NAMM (the National Association of Music Merchants) supports AI in music. Eight AI peddling companies participated in the January 2025 show, including Songzap, a company who published a contradictory statement on their own page ...we believe that AI can be used for good, as a supportive tool that enhances human creativity rather than replaces it. Songzap deploys artificial intelligence in the Beat, Bass and Pad session players that listen to your performances to generate virtual session buddies
. So basically replace human session musicians. Another company who participated was Moises whose AI software canRemove vocals and instruments, create AI-generated stems
among other things. I'm guessing the 2026 show will include many more alongside products for actual musicians, such as companies like Ibanez and Fender, and it's a little too much like the trees voting for the axe in my opinion (guitar pun not intended).
If you're a musician and want to read a cringey and rage inducing article on AI in music, one can be found here. I'll agree with the article on one point, yes, Beethoven would have tears in his eyes
but not for the reasons the writer is asserting.
I believe that music and art are what separates humans from other animals (Unless you've read the book, Why Cats Paint
, I never could tell if that was entirely satire or not but it doesn't matter) and that these are precious things to be protected in order to preserve the culture of humankind. I believe that the NAMM conference and any artists
utilizing these tools shouls be boycotted and shunned.
