Aquatic Plants

buce right

This is a video I made for youtube 2 years ago, these were my tanks at the time. The propogation methods still apply, but I've realized that I did not include info on which plants need high tech conditions and which do not. That will be explained below. I also know more about the Laganandra Meboldii now.

plants in the video that do NOT need CO2:

  • Anubias
  • Pogostemon Stellatus
  • All Crypts shown except Pink Flamingo
  • Java Moss
  • Java ferns
  • Susswassertang
  • Amazon Swords (Echinodorus)
  • Pearl Weed (but it does much better with it)
  • Rotala Rotundifolia
  • Crinum Calimistratum
The jury of myself is out on a few as I've only tried growing them with CO2. These are the Buce, Limnophilas, Bacopas (they do need higher light though) and the Laganandra. I cannot grow nympheas (lillies) without it.

plants in the video that DO need CO2, at least for my conditions:

  • AR/Scarlet Temple/Althernanthera
  • Golden Nessea
  • hygrophila angustifolia
  • Rotala Macrandra
I have since lost the Mermaid Weed, so I don't know what it needs.

laganandra meboldii

I had two of these plants, one died. When I bought them I thought they were rooted-type plants like anubias or swords. As the one that has survived has grown, I'm starting to think they are epiphytic. You can see in the photo below that the rhizome has started to lift itself up out of the gravel, and epiphytic plants do not like to have their rhizomes buried, which might be why the other one died. I probably could've looked this up. Regardless, the image below attempts to demonstrate how to propogate this plant. Locate the nodes (anywhere leaf petioles emerge from the stem) and cut in between them. More info will be in the Aquatic Plants are Easy page when I get to making that one.

Below are my favorite tanks when they are at their best. If I downsized hard, I would keep these. I like all my fish, so I feel bad saying it, but the ones in these tanks are my favorite. You can probably barely see them in the photos if at all because they all think my phone is the predator known as Telecommunicatus pescaphagus. dutch style tank
